What do the A1Monitor Startup, SMTP Servers, and Proxy Settings tab do?

Startup, SMTP, and Proxy Settings tab

"Make A1Monitor run as an NT service" checkbox:

  • Available for Windows NT / Windows 2000 / Windows XP only.
  • When A1Monitor installs itself as an NT Service, it is set to be "automatic". Choose "Control Panel", then "Services", and scroll down to find "A1Monitor". A service must be "automatic" for it to start automatically when windows NT restarts.
  • If you install A1Monitor on your NT web server machine, you may want to install A1Monitor as an NT Service. You can also check the "...shutdown and restart..." [MORE INFO] checkbox so A1Monitor can reboot your web server, and automatically restart as a service if your web server stops responding.
  • You can specify the name of the service. By default it's A1Monitor.
SMTP Server:
  • Most mail client programs are SMTP clients.
  • Your browser's mail program uses an SMTP client.
  • A typical SMTP server name is "mail.yourdomain.com"
  • If you get mail through your browser, look at your browser's mail setup to determine the name of your SMTP.
  • If you don't have an SMTP server connected (via LAN, dial-up connection, or on the same machine), you can't be notified.
Time Zone Adjust:
  • This value is put in the Email Notification Header sent to you when Server Failures Occur
  • Some people have complained (in earlier versions of A1Monitor) that they needed to adjust this value (to adjust for their timezone)
  • If you use the email header date value, you can type in your adjustment here.
Proxy Server and Port:
  • Specify your proxy server and port. e.g. "http://wwwproxy.yourco.com" and "8080"
  • When A1Monitor runs as an NT service, it's very important you specify the proxy server settings even if it appears to monitor the Servers when you are testing . There is a problem with programs running as NT Services. If you have to connect through a proxy server, you MUST specify the proxy server and port or it will not work when run as a service.
  • You may see a "Use Microsoft IE Proxy Settings" button on this screen. If A1Monitor can successfully read the registry and finds proxy server information from IE4, it will allow you to click on this button to fill in the proxy server information for you. The button is invisible if it finds no proxy server information. This is no guarantee that the settings are correct, but assumes if there are values, you set them, and they likely are correct.

User Review

Brian Stewart - www. heartofbusiness. ca

We have used A1 Monitor for a year now and it has been superb. Easy as it was to set up, it was the least expensive and best way we found to monitor the integrity of our web servers.

We would recommend this product to anybody who needs to keep on top of the status of their servers.
